We are very lucky to be able to have many perennial species that do well in this type of climate. Rochester NY also has the biggest concentration of Lilacs than any other part of the country. Blue Iris

This Rochester NY native iris, or Iris versicolor, is also known as the blue flag. Its deep blue flowers accent any garden. Maturing between 2 and 4 feet, it blossoms in late spring. This wildflower prefers moist soils, and does well in soggy areas. In its natural habitat, blue iris lives in wetlands and stream banks.

Black-Eyed Susans

This popular wildflower, also known as Rudbeckia hirta, brightens the landscape with the yellow flowers surrounding it dark “eye.” A biennial, the plant  grows and blooms for two years, in summer. Cut the long-stemmed flowers to adorn vases. Birds flock to the plant to consume seeds. Black-eyed Susans do best in moist, well-drained soils, but can survive periods of drought. Another plus — deer don’t like to eat this plant. They can become invasive since they reproduce very quickly.

Bee Balm

Attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies to your native garden with bee balm, or Monarda fistulosa. This purple-flowering herb needs well-drained, moist soil. Do not let it get overcrowded with other plants in the garden. Bee balm does well in full or partial sun. Also referred to as Oswego tea or bergamot, dry the leaves and make them into a soothing tea.

Cardinal Flower

Cardinal flower, or Lobelia Cardinalis, provides bright red color to the western New York garden. The perennial produces spikes of blossoms, and grow as high as 6 feet tall. The cardinal flowers blooms from spring until fall, and its red flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. It does well in full or partial sun, but prefers moist soils

“Many of my plants I grew from scratch, I would look up an online seed dealer and purchase rare and unusual perennial seeds. For the majority of the seeds planted I did very good, I had a 90% success rate however at the end I ended up with way too many plants. A seed envelop can get you 20-40 good perennial plants for around $2-$5 dollars. If you purchase the same plant at the big box store or at a gardening supply store they will cost you from $10-$100, many of the rare perennials I own cannot be found anywhere to be purchased” mentions Andre Alves from Rochester NY. Andre tried growing perennial plants from scratch (seeds) and did very well.

The only downside of using seeds is that the plants usually need about one year in order to start flowering and looking good. Some of the Fox Gloves Andre Alves planted took about a year before they were flowering and got to be a decent size.
