Turn any backyard into a productive organic vegetable garden and become the envy of the whole neighborhood, without spending much at all!

When separating vegetable plants this year, rather than dropping them in the yard waste container, drop by the Andre Leite Alves Rochester NY Organic Vegetable Garden Exchange and find someone to exchange plants with and get new vegetable plants.

“This is a great way for organic gardeners to promote an healthy plant exchange and add new varieties of vegetable plants to any organic vegetable garden in Rochester New York. Organic vegetable gardeners also have a change to meet other Rochester gardeners, share information and experiences…and eat foods that are pesticide free, while saving money,” said Andre Leite Alves from Rochester NY Organic Vegetable Garden Exchange. Andre Leite Alves will be hosting the Rochester NY annual organic vegetable garden in the spring of 2012.

“This is one of the best times of the year to share vegetable plants. Dig them now while they’re small enough to handle. They’ll adjust to their new location faster with growth just starting” mentions Arthur Leite Alves from Rochester, NY.

No registration is required for the event, which will take place at the Rochester, NY 12 Corners. Leite Alves said, “This is a free event, and only trading of organic vegetable plants is permitted. All plants should be labeled, and only healthy, pest-free and chemical free plants may be exchanged.”

Organic vegetable plants may be in bags, boxes or any other disposable containers. Those who have plants to sell may do so at the neighborhood garage sales in Brighton New York.

Andre Leite Alves from Rochester, NY owns Aware Bear Computer Repair in Pittsford, NY reminds people about not selling plants or garden supplies at the Rochester NY Organic Vegetable Garden Exchange group. “The Rochester Organic Vegetable Garden Exchange group was created in order to promote the plant exchange between neighbors and friends. The whole idea is to exchange the surplus plants instead of throwing them out” said Andre Leite Alves from Pittsford, New York.

When gardeners bring a plant to the free Organic Vegetable Plant Exchange Group, a space where the exchange can take place will be given. Labeling all plants is recommended in order to help the plant identification process. Plants should be identified by type, such as “Red peppers, Zucchinis, Broccoli or any other vegetable” These labels can help expedite the exchange process, said Arthur Alves from Rochester New York.

Global Warming Can Kill Perennial Plants in Rochester, NY

For anyone living in Rochester NY or any part of Upstate NY would have to agree that the 2011-2012 winters have been really warm. Temperatures have been in the 50 and 60 F during the December and January months.

Andre Alves from Rochester NY explains that many perennial plants in Rochester NY, especially the ones native to Upstate NY need the snow in order to hibernate and then come up in the spring. When the weather fluctuates and temperatures are higher than normal during the wrong time of the year, this phenomenon can confuse plants and other animals that hibernate during the winter.

“The whole eco system gets messed up” mentions Andre Alves from Rochester NY. Plants cannot relocate themselves and try to survive like animals and birds do, during the winter months. The biggest misconception people have, is that birds relocate to Southern States during the winter because the weather gets cold and they get cold.

Global Warming Can Kill Perennial Plants in Rochester, NY, Andre Alves Pittsford, NY

Birds body temperatures range from 97 to 104 F, as far as snow and the cold winter months they have no problem dealing with the weather. The reason why birds migrate south is because of the lack of food. The ground freezes up and food is no longer available.

On the other hand, plants are stuck on their natural habitat, if a change of weather comes along where the weather gets warmer, causing perennial plants to die they cannot relocate to another spot. It is estimated that 15-37 % of plants and animals may become extinct by the year 2050 because of the global warming.

Global Warming is already affecting our and our agriculture. The lack or too much rain is a very good example on how the changes in the weather can distress the plants and our agriculture. With perennial plants the growing cycles are being affected by the warmer weather and causing the plants not to reproduce properly.

With the glaciers melting, the sea level is also growing and taking over dry land. The salt or fresh water can kill many plant species that grow around rivers, creeks and the sea.

The Rochester NY Perennial Exchange is organized by Andre Alves a Brighton NY resident and a Pittsford NY small business owner. If you have any questions please let Andre know. Make sure to become a Rochester Perennial Exchange fan of our Facebook group.

Andre Alves from Rochester NY talks about the native perennial plants in Rochester NY. Rochester NY is located in Upstate New York, one hour away from Niagara Falls NY and Buffalo NY. A lot of people that live in Rochester NY do not realize how diverse the plants are in this part of the country.

We are very lucky to be able to have many perennial species that do well in this type of climate. Rochester NY also has the biggest concentration of Lilacs than any other part of the country. The Highland Park has the largest concentration of Lilacs in the whole United States. Every year Rochester celebrates the arrival of the summer by having the Lilac Festival. This ten day festival attracts people from all over.

Some of the native perennial species in Rochester NY are:

Blue Iris

This Rochester NY native iris, or Iris versicolor, is also known as the blue flag. Its deep blue flowers accent any garden. Maturing between 2 and 4 feet, it blossoms in late spring. This wildflower prefers moist soils, and does well in soggy areas. In its natural habitat, blue iris lives in wetlands and stream banks.

Black-Eyed Susans

This popular wildflower, also known as Rudbeckia hirta, brightens the landscape with the yellow flowers surrounding it dark “eye.” A biennial, the plant  grows and blooms for two years, in summer. Cut the long-stemmed flowers to adorn vases. Birds flock to the plant to consume seeds. Black-eyed Susans do best in moist, well-drained soils, but can survive periods of drought. Another plus — deer don’t like to eat this plant. They can become invasive since they reproduce very quickly.

Bee Balm

Attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies to your native garden with bee balm, or Monarda fistulosa. This purple-flowering herb needs well-drained, moist soil. Do not let it get overcrowded with other plants in the garden. Bee balm does well in full or partial sun. Also referred to as Oswego tea or bergamot, dry the leaves and make them into a soothing tea.

Cardinal Flower

The cardinal flowers blooms from spring until fall, and its red flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. It does well in full or partial sun, but prefers moist soils

Perennial plants are wonderful to have since they always come back  the following year (in most cases they do.). In a lot of cases wild animals can feed of them, a good example is Deer that likes to feed on Hosta plants. If you live in or around the Pittsford NY area this problem may apply to you, since the Deer population has increased a lot in the last few years.

Andre Alves Rochester NY Perennial Exchange Big Perennials

“The biggest problem I had in my yard was that the perennial plants would get really big, in the beginning it was easy all I had to do was divide them and plant the other half / quarter of the plant in a different location. Every 2 years we would need to divide and transplant plants.

Now you have 2 or 4 plants that will grow just as fast and will need to be divided again, what do you do?” says Andre Alves from Rochester NY.

Andre Alves Rochester NY Perennial Exchange Plant Trade

The answer for this question is easy; you trade for different plants and get your yard looking great. The idea of perennial plant exchange group in Rochester NY came from that problem. If we all can divide our plants and later  trade them with someone else, we can get gorgeous flower gardens in Rochester NY.

Andre Alves from Pittsford NY has over 90 varieties of perennials at his home on the 12 Corners in Brighton NY.

Andre Alves Rochester NY Perennial Exchange Growing from Seeds

“Many of my plants I grew from scratch, I would look up an online seed dealer and purchase rare and unusual perennial seeds. For the majority of the seeds planted I did very good, I had a 90% success rate however at the end I ended up with way too many plants. A seed envelop can get you 20-40 good perennial plants for around $2-$5 dollars. If you purchase the same plant at the big box store or at a gardening supply store they will cost you from $10-$100, many of the rare perennials I own cannot be found anywhere to be purchased” mentions Andre Alves from Rochester NY. Andre tried growing perennial plants from scratch (seeds) and did very well.

The only downside of using seeds is that the plants usually need about one year in order to start flowering and looking good. Some of the Fox Gloves Andre Alves planted took about a year before they were flowering and got to be a decent size. If you have the patience to wait or have plenty of perennial plant surplus you can trade with the fellow Rochester NY plant lovers and have a gorgeous garden by the time you get done.

If you like to become a member of the Rochester NY Perennial Exchange Group, you can look us up on Facebook. The best times to divide and move perennial plants are usually in the fall or early spring. By moving the plants while they are dormant increases your chances of a successful plant transplant. We can’t wait to see everyone again in the spring, until then be safe.
